The Wechsler and Sinnett-Smiths were families given to migration going all the way back to the 15th Century and probably beyond that. Migration was more or less voluntary. In either family, migration was usually caused by war, religious disputes or economic neccesity. Migration was more common in the family branches north of the alps or on the British isles. Migration of mediterranean families began towards the end of the 18th Century, beginning of the 19th Century.
Most of the family branches migrated within the boundries of their cultural and language heritage - the Brits heading for "typically" British destinations such as Naples or Sicily, while German-speaking forebearers headed east to Bohemia and Moravia, to Vienna or to the Southern tip of the Austrian-Habsburg Empire, Trieste. French family branches on the other hand preferred the Levante and settled in Aleppo, Beirut or Saida, before moving on to Egypt, where eventually all family branches ended. The Maltese as a seafaring nation relocated in sea ports around the Mediterranean, many preferring locations "close to home" such as Sicily. And finally the Italian branch left the mountain areas for Udine and later Trieste, before ending up in the fast growing Italian community in Egypt.
