LOOKING FOR
- Descendents of Meschel and Malcha Raibach from Jarosław
- Descendents of Leib and Rukhel Wechlser from Jarosław
Leib "Leon" Wechsler and his wife Ruckel "Rachel" Raibach left Jaroslaw sometime between 1835 and 1845. The last trace we have of them is the confirmation of their son Isreal's birth in Jarosław. Unfortunately, no further records exist documenting their whereabouts before 1845, which is the birth year of their daughter, Esther "Stella," born in Trieste. .
We do know that the couple arrived in Trieste with at least two children, Samuel and Israel. While Samuel and Esther remained in Trieste and are buried there with their families in the Jewish Cemetery of Trieste, Israel married the Italian Jewess Rosa Camerini from Senigallia in the Marche. The couple later migrated to Alexandria, Egypt, after the birth of their third child. It is highly probable that Leib and Ruckel joined them in Egypt, but eventually returned to Trieste, where they found their final resting place.
Ruckel was 26 when her son Samuel was born in 1832 in Jarosław, with Israel following two years later. The birth of Esther came 11 years after Israel's. Given the time and era, it is unlikely that there were no further children born during this gap. To find any missing siblings, if they exist, we would need to know when the couple left Jarosław and where they went.
In Israel's birth confirmation it is mentioned, that Leib and Ruckel were citizens of Jarosław. This is proven through the Heimatschein which was passed on to my grandfather Otto Wechsler through his father Hermann, Israel's son, who in turn inherited it from his father.
Interestingly, the Jewish congregation of Jarosław couldn't find a birth entry for Israel in their registries, but confirmed the birth based on the existence of a family sheet. This suggests that either the records were missing, or Israel was born elsewhere but recorded on the family sheet, as all family events needed to be reported to the place of origin.
It appears that Leib and Rukhel, along with their two sons, were the only members of the Wechsler family to emigrate to Trieste from Jarosław. No further family members seem to have followed them. Therefore, it is possible that they left family members behind in Jarosław, including potentially older children, depending on their date of departure. The first Wechslers recorded in Trieste after Leib and Rukhel is a certain Bernhard Wechsler from Jassy in the 1870's and his wife Irene Wechsler, born Wintergrün.
While some members of the Reibach family are documented in Jarosław at the beginning of the 20th century, the Wechsler name appears sparingly in the still-existing documents and registries and no links can be made to the few Wechslers who appear in the records of the Jewish congregation of Jarosław in the 19th Century. With these exceptions, the Wechslers from Jarosław seem to have disappeared from historical records. No emigration, ship lists, births, weddings, or deaths were found, except for a mention in the memorial pages of the Yizhov Book for Jarosław for the "complete Wechsler family" who perished in the Holocaust. Unfortunately, the names of the family members were not mentioned. It's possible that family members or friends were not able to provide this information, as no "Pages of Testimony" were created for them to date.
It is highly likely that Ruckel was also related to Meschel and Machla Raibach. If they were Ruckel's parents, she had at least two brothers, Selig and Izak. Selig, the older one of both, was married to Jutta Morenberg. Their only known child was Baruch Raibach who married Sime Stark, the daughter of Benjamin Stark and Chana Wentus around 1864. Baruch and Sime had at least eight children, of which two passed away in infancy, probably twins who died at birth as no names were registered. Two sons, Samuel and Leib Raibach emigrated to the US in the late 1890's during the second Galician Emigration Wave. One, Samuel stayed in New York, the other, Leib (or Leon), moved to Oregan. Descendents are spread out around the United States and the states of New York and Oregon.
Benjamin Wolf Raibach, another son and their only daughter Chana Neshe, moved to Vienna. In 1912, Benjamin married Bertha Beck, and their son Kurt was born in 1913. Unfortunately, both Benjamin and Bertha met a tragic fate after their deportation to Minsk in 1941, where they were murdered. The destiny of Kurt remains unknown, and it is also uncertain if there were any other children.
Chana "Anna" Neshe married the widower Samuel Klepner from Przemysl, Poland, in 1911. They had two children, Sidonia (born in 1912) and Walter (born in 1915). After Samuel's passing in July 1915, Chana Neshe, along with her children and Samuel's son Ignaz from his previous marriage to Feigel Chaje Zeltner, mourned his loss.
In 1942, Chana Neshe was deported to Izbica, Poland, where she tragically lost her life. However, amidst the hardships of the Holocaust, there were tales of resilience. Ignaz, Sidonie, and Walter managed to survive those difficult times.
Sidonie, seeking a new start, emigrated to the UK and in 1948, she married Kazimierz Rudnicky. Walter, on the other hand, endured internment at Dachau but was eventually liberated. He later decided to make a fresh beginning in New York. Ignaz's journey took him to New York as well before eventually settling in Australia. Despite the challenges, they all found ways to rebuild their lives in different parts of the world.
The most recent recorded birth in the Reibach family is that of Bronislaw Raibach, born in 1906 in Jarosław to Chaim Izac Reibach, who was a descendant of Meschel and Machla Reibach, and his wife Gitla Heller, daughter of Sara Heller and Abraham Moses Leibstein from Jaroslaw. Chaim Izac Reibach was another child of Baruch and Sime, but unfortunately, their fate remains unknown. On the other hand, the last recorded death is that of Meyer Hersch Reibach in 1931 at the age of 77. He was the son of Izak Raibach and Mindel "Minnie" Metzger.
Izak or Isidore Raibach, the second son of Meschel and Machla Reibach, and possibly the brother to Rukhel, was born around 1821 and passed away in 1877. His wife, Mindel Metzger, was the daughter of Markus Metzger and Sure "Sara" Reise Gaschke. Together, they had a son named Meyer Hersche, as mentioned before, and a daughter named Sara.
Meyer Hersch Reibach married Pesche Fischer, and they were blessed with three known children - Isak, Friede Sunne, and Mindel, who tragically passed away in infancy. Isak married Spritze "Sabine" Einhorn in s'-Gravehage, Netherlands in 1920 but sadly passed away at the young age of 35 in 1933. Feige Sunne decided to embark on her journey to the US in 1915 at the age of 19. The ship's list notes that her passage was paid by her aunt, and she planned on residing with her cousin M. Slossberg. She married Isidor Beigel in New York a year after arriving.
Sara Reibach married Abraham Frauenhaar or Feinhaar in Sieniawa in 1897. She, too, ventured to the US and passed away in 1933. Sara and Abraham had three known children - Isidore, Minnie, and Chana Itte.
Each journey has a beginning.
